We propose a tour of the most singular places in Figueres linked to the artist Salvador Dalí i Domènech. We’ll explore the settings of his life, such as his family home, the church where he was baptised and where his funeral was held, his second home, where he painted his first works, and his most mature and complex creation, the Dalí Theatre-Museum, among many others.

The Toy Museum of Catalonia contains a section devoted to the childhood and adolescence of Salvador Dalí, with photos of the family, his school studies, his first exhibitions, etc. The most outstanding piece is Don Osito Marquina, the Dalí brothers’ favourite toy, named like that due to the creativity of the poet Federico García Lorca.
Beside the Rambla there’s a large outdoor commercial area that encompasses the streets with the most history in the city. It’s ideal for finding everything you need, strolling around and finding its squares, nooks and crannies and some of the city’s noble buildings, such as the old Church of Sant Pere.

The Dalí Theatre-Museum is a pole of attraction for thousands of visitors throughout the year. It was built upon Salvador Dalí’s express wishes on the remains of the old Municipal Theatre of his home town and it was conceived and designed by the artist himself to offer visitors the chance to enter into his surreal and captivating world.

Figueres is connected to the territory via different routes, including the Itinnerània path network, the Way of Saint James, which crosses the region from La Jonquera to Girona, and the path along the Manol river. In turn, these are linked to other networks such as the Pirinexus or the Gran Recorregut (GR) or long-distance paths.
The main healthy circuit within the city is the one that encircles Sant Ferran castle, allowing you to admire this spectacular monument and, at the same time, enjoy the magnificent view of the plain of the Empordà.
Dalí spent a large part of his life in Figueres, particularly the early and final years; he was baptised and his funeral was held in the Church of Sant Pere and he frequented restaurants such as the Hotel Duran and the Astoria, as well as the Canet Bookshop and the Rambla.

The Forest Park constitutes the lungs of Figueres; covering more than 44,000 m2 it’s the largest green area in the city and it boasts important botanical diversity, as well as a picnic zone and two children’s play areas. In fact, Figueres has about 80 children’s play areas throughout the city. There are also several private children’s playgrounds.
This year, after two special editions due to Covid restrictions, the original form of the festival is back!
Feel the Acústica!
Each year this music festival puts on about thirty performances that occupy different urban spaces in the historical and commercial centre of the city. It has become a benchmark festival in the Catalan music scene, with the presence of artists renowned throughout the country. It also offers a family programme so that both younger and older visitors can enjoy the experience!
As well as the concerts, the Acústica organises parallel activities such as the Record Fair, food trucks and the Acústica Market, a space where young creators can showcase their collections.

Figueres has two railway stations. The conventional railway station, at which the commuter lines with connections to a large part of Catalonia arrive, is located in the city centre.
The high-speed station connects Figueres with Barcelona and Madrid on the one hand and with Paris and several French cities on the other. This station is located a kilometre and a half from the city centre and provides a shuttle bus service coordinated with the arrival of each train, as well as a fleet of taxis.
Figueres has a complex that consists of two indoor municipal swimming pools, one 25 m long and another small (16.6 m x 6 m), 1 m deep. Right next door is the outdoor pool, a perfect place to cool off and play sports on the hottest days.
In addition, there are water activities for the whole family: aquagym, aquasalus, correction, maintenance and learning to swim.
The Albert Gurt Stadium in Figueres has a 400-metre athletics track with 6 lanes, 2 long jump areas, 1 high jump area, 1 pole vault area, 1 shot putt area and a football pitch.
Figueres has one of the largest skateparks in Catalonia, 700 square metres in size. Located in Avinguda Maria Àngels Anglada, s/n, the project was designed in partnership with the city’s users. It is a meeting place for lovers of skateboarding, scooters, BMX and rollerblading. Occasional sporting events and competitions are held here.
The Alt Empordà Tennis Club sports complex, located at Pujada del Castell, 53, has three tennis courts with synthetic flooring approved by the Catalan Tennis Federation. The courts are separated from each other, which means that this sport can be played in a comfortable, quiet and pleasant manner.
The Figueres Tennis Club is a leading tennis and paddle institution in the province of Girona. The club’s facilities consist of 7 tennis courts, 7 paddle tennis courts, 2 touch tennis courts, a gym and an outdoor pool, among many others. . Several leagues and championships are held throughout the year.
A sports complex covering 800 square metres with a climbing wall, a boulder area and specific training grounds, a technical climbing area, other complementary equipment and ancillary services.

The Figueres Tourist Information Office is located in the city centre, a few metres from Salvador Dalí’s family home, the Rambla and the Dalí Theatre-Museum. The building that houses it was the former municipal slaughterhouse, an outstanding piece of Catalan modernism. Inside it there is also a temporary exhibition room for contemporary art and culture managed by the Empordà Museum.
The office staff provide personalised assistance for visitors from here and further afield in several languages, with tourist information and proposals for activities for finding out more about the city, the county and Catalonia.
The office has free Wi-Fi and a touch screen with an internet connection for tourist-related enquiries about Figueres and the county. Outside it an interactive touch totem provides a 24-hour service.

Figueres is easily accessible by road. It’s only half an hour from Girona and the border with France and an hour and a half from Barcelona via the N-II road or AP-7 motorway (exits 3 and 4).
The N-260 road connects the city with the coast (Llançà and Portbou) to the north-east and the interior and the Pyrenees (Garrotxa) to the west. It can also be reached from the area of the Bay of Roses and El Cap de Creus along the C-260 road.
The coach station is located next to the conventional railway station beside the centre of Figueres. It brings together coaches that cover lines around the county, province (connections with the whole of the Costa Brava) and Catalonia and others that provide international connections.
Figueres doesn’t have its own airport but it can be reached from the nearest Catalan ones: Girona-Costa Brava Airport (37 km away) and Barcelona-El Prat Airport (154 km away).
There’s a bus route that runs between the two airports and Figueres. You can also use the rail connections, although they involve a change of means of transport in the centre of Girona or Barcelona.
The quality and uniqueness of Empordà oil are guaranteed by the specific varieties in the area. Its taste and sensations change, depending on which of them the oil is produced with, from the delicate balance between sweet and bitter of the argudell and corivell varieties to the fruity and mature oil with a certain degree of spiciness that comes from the verdal or Llei de Cadaqués variety.
In any event, Empordà oil has a clear, clean and transparent appearance and remarkable complexity, with aromas reminiscent of fennel, almonds and anise.
As well as the tastings, don’t miss out on the experience of visiting the mills with hydraulic press systems where the oil is traditionally made.
There are a wide range of Empordà wines. The red wines are of high quality, full-bodied, well-constituted and harmonious, sometimes with the nuance of a careful ageing process.
The white wines are often made with local, fresh and tasty varieties, as well as other monovarieties of notable quality. There are also rosé wines characterised by a well-defined cherry colour, great personality, delicate and fresh aromas and a moderate alcohol content.
Two singular wines from the area are sweet and ideal for accompanying desserts: the Empordà Grenache and the Empordà Muscatel. The organic wines, mistelas, over-ripe grape wines and sparkling wines complete the Empordà range.

The Jazz Festival, organised by local entities, schedules different styles with the aim of satisfying all kinds of audiences. It seeks to introduce jazz to the people and the city and turns some areas of Figueres (squares, streets, premises, auditoriums and theatres) into the main stages of the Festival.

Figueres es MOU (Figueres Moves) is a dance and movement festival. Each year it brings together domestic and international artists to put on dance performances in the city’s squares and theatres. Its goal is to introduce dance to all kinds of spectators; its excellence in reaching new audiences has been acknowledged by the 2019-2020 Effe Label. It therefore searches for interaction and experiences shared by the artists and the public, not only with the performances, but also with the creative classes and workshops open to everyone.

The local festival is held in Figueres on 3rd May (the day of Santa Creu). Each day throughout a week different fairs fills the city’s streets and squares with life. There’s something for all ages and interests, including drawing and painting, old books, second-hand items, craftwork, food, local products, attractions, etc.
The Empordà Wine Show is held on the Rambla each year. This is a top-tier event for the promotion of DO Empordà wines and the county as a destination for wine tourists. It’s a meeting point for the wineries and agri-food producers from the area and the general public from home and abroad. As well as the stands for trying and purchasing wines, numerous activities based on the world of wine are organised, ranging from tastings and visits to talks.
The fair for sellers of second-hand items and collectors is held every third Saturday of the month. The Rambla is packed with antiques and curiosities of all kinds, ranging from furniture and household items to books, records and colour prints. It’s a pole of attraction for the locals and visitors to the city and the atmosphere encourages them to stand and gape all day.
Each year this fair brings together thousands of visitors from all over Catalonia and the south of France. The city’s dealers exhibit and sell vehicles of all makes at special prices.
This fair is held every year on Sant Josep’s Day (around 19th March) to enable you to lick your fingers as you enjoy the brunyols (fritters) of the Empordà. You’ll find stalls where you can taste and buy them as well as other food and artisan products. Children’s recreational activities, musical performances and other forms of entertainment are also organised.
This is a collectible toy fair where you can find trains, dolls, puzzles, puppets, comics and all kinds of toys from our and other European countries. Come and find, buy, sell or swap toys which, like so many new ones, date back to the 1980s!
Beside the Rambla there’s a large outdoor commercial area that encompasses the streets with the most history in the city. It’s ideal for finding everything you need as you stroll around in a pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. The establishments and products are numerous, ranging from local businesses to international franchises, from food to clothes and accessories, electronics and much, much more!
It brings together a private collection with more than 3,000 mechanical objects from around the world that explain the technological transformations of the 19th and part of the 20th centuries. A museum to jog the memories of older visitors and for younger ones to discover.

Salvador Dalí Domènech was born here on 11th May 1904. The Dalí family lived on the mezzanine floor of this property located in Carrer de Monturiol, number 6 (nowadays number 20) and his father had his notary’s office on the ground floor. Work is currently being carried out on it as part of a project to museify the premises and open them to the public.

The fact that Figueres is a dalian city is reflected in the numerous sculptures inspired by the artist that are scattered all around it: “Portrait of Dalí” in the lower square of the Rambla, the huge cypress that welcomes you from the south of the city, “La Grande Cuillère”, donated by the Georges Pompidou Centre, and so on.
